All Aboard for a ride on Puffing Billy these school holidays!
Loved by generations for over 100 years, Puffing Billy is one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world! The century old steam train is still running on its original 24 kilometre mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook. Kids and adults alike will love the feeling of the wind in their hair as they wind through the lush rainforest and beautiful fern gullies of the magnificent Dandenong Ranges enjoying the view from the iconic open-sided carriages. Located just one hour east of Melbourne, it makes for the perfect day out for the whole family!
You can choose to start your journey at either Belgrave Station or Lakeside Station (located in Emerald Lake Park). You can view the full timetable here
Trains depart at least four times a day, and run every day of the year except Christmas Day.
At Emerald Lake Park, there are plenty of activities to enjoy during your stopover, or at the start/end of your journey including:
Walks around the lake and through the park.
Hire a paddle boat on the lake (Summer months only) (Separate fare)
Check out the model railway (Separate entry fee)
Young children can swim in the wading pool (Summer months only)
On our platform we have a shop for refreshments, souvenirs and ticket sales
There is a cafe in the park for light meals and takeaway food and there are free electric BBQs and lots of picnic tables.
No matter which journey you choose, we guarantee you’ll have a great time!
There is very limited parking at the Belgrave Puffing Billy Station however you are able to park at the Connex Trains’ carpark and follow the sign-posted walkway under the main road bridge. Arrive early to avoid missing out. Parking is also available at:
- Menzies Creek free parking is available within the station grounds
- Emerald the same applies except on the Special Thomas The Tank Days
- Lakeside (Emerald Lake), there are council operated ticket machines
- Gembrook the parking is free
WHERE: Puffing Billy is in Belgrave, a 50-minute drive from central Melbourne. It’s a 70-minute train ride from Flinders St Station on the Belgrave line.
